The Doctor, Rose, and new companion Adam Mitchell arrive on Satellite 5, a space station in the year 200,000 that broadcasts news across the entire human empire. The Doctor quickly grows suspicious that humanity’s development has been artificially stalled and that something is deliberately controlling the flow of information to the population. Investigating with station worker Cathica, they discover the news network is secretly run by the Editor, who answers to a monstrous alien intelligence hidden atop the station, feeding on and manipulating the human race through managed information for its own profit. Meanwhile, Adam’s opportunistic attempt to smuggle future technology back to 21st-century Earth leads the Doctor to abandon him, ending his time as a companion.
