Summary
Concluding the story begun in “The Empty Child,” the Doctor, Rose, Jack, and Nancy race to understand and stop the spread of the gas-mask infection sweeping through Blitz-era London, tracing it back to nanogenes released from Captain Jack’s crashed ambulance ship, which have been repairing the dead and injured according to a badly mistaken template. The Doctor realizes the “empty child” is Nancy’s own son, Jamie, and that the key to reversing the epidemic lies in convincing the nanogenes of the correct human genetic template through Nancy’s parental bond with him. In a rare, triumphant conclusion, the Doctor manages to save everyone infected rather than lose a single life, prompting his famous, gleeful declaration: “Just this once, everybody lives!”
