Summary

A machine on a distant war-torn colony world unexpectedly generates a fully grown “daughter” for the Doctor from a genetic sample, forcing him to confront both an unfamiliar new family member and a decades-long conflict between human colonists and the reptilian Hath. As Jenny proves herself capable and brave despite the Doctor’s initial wariness, tragedy strikes, testing exactly how far his moral principles about violence and family extend.

Interesting Facts

  • Georgia Moffett, who plays Jenny, is the real-life daughter of Peter Davison, the actor who played the Fifth Doctor, and later married David Tennant himself.
  • The episode explores the Doctor’s complicated feelings about fatherhood and loss following the earlier, off-screen deaths of his original Gallifreyan family.
  • Jenny’s apparent death and surprising last-minute revival became a notable point of fan discussion regarding her potential status as a Time Lord.
  • The story’s central conflict, in which generations of warring colonists have lost sight of the war’s original cause, serves as a broader anti-war allegory.
