Summary
The Doctor, Amy, and Rory find themselves flipping between two competing realities, one a quiet future life in the village of Leadworth where Amy is heavily pregnant with Rory, the other the TARDIS besieged by lethal frozen “Eknodine” creatures, unsure which is real and which is a dream. Presiding gleefully over their confusion is the sneering Dream Lord, whose taunts force Amy to confront which life, and which man, she truly wants.
Interesting Facts
- Toby Jones’s Dream Lord was later strongly implied by Steven Moffat to be a dark manifestation of the Doctor’s own psyche.
- The episode’s central puzzle, of two realities each convincingly “real” until proven otherwise, was praised as one of the series’ most psychologically layered concepts.
- Amy’s ultimate choice to remain with Rory rather than pursue an idealized future with the Doctor became a key turning point in her arc.
- The story was written by Simon Nye, better known at the time as a sitcom writer, brought in to give the episode a sharper comic bite.
