Summary
Struggling to balance teaching at Coal Hill School, her secret travels with the Doctor, and her relationship with Danny Pink, Clara is blindsided when the Doctor goes “undercover” at her own school, posing as caretaker “John Smith” to secretly hunt a murderous alien robot called the Skovox Blitzer that has landed nearby. Danny grows suspicious of the caretaker’s strange behavior and accidentally interferes with one of the Doctor’s displacement devices, complicating the plan and forcing an increasingly tense confrontation between Danny and the Doctor, who dismisses him repeatedly as “the PE teacher” despite Danny actually teaching maths. After Clara’s double life is finally exposed to Danny and student Courtney Woods stumbles onto the TARDIS, the trio narrowly manage to disable the Blitzer before it detonates during a school parents’ evening. The episode ends with Danny warning Clara not to let the Doctor push her too far — while, unseen, the mysterious Missy receives word of another death in the “Nethersphere.”
Interesting Facts
- The Doctor’s use of the alias “John Smith” continues a running tradition dating back to the 1968 serial “The Wheel in Space,” used by many incarnations since.
- The premise directly echoes 1988’s “Remembrance of the Daleks,” in which the Seventh Doctor was similarly mistaken for a caretaker applicant at Coal Hill School.
- This episode features the first confirmed dialogue reference tying “Missy” and the “Nethersphere” together with Seb’s line that she is “too busy” — quietly building toward the series finale’s reveal.
- Ellis George’s performance as student Courtney Woods was singled out by several critics as a highlight, with Courtney becoming a recurring character across the remainder of the series.
- The Doctor references River Song, last seen in “The Name of the Doctor” (2013), continuing a thread of allusions to his past companions during this period.
