Summary
On New Year’s Day, archaeologists in Sheffield accidentally reactivate a dormant Dalek mutant that has lain dormant and dismembered for over a thousand years, which promptly takes control of a human host and begins reconstructing a makeshift battle armor from salvaged scrap parts while planning to signal the wider Dalek Empire for reinforcement, forcing the Doctor and her friends to stop the creature before its distress call can be answered, all while Graham and Ryan quietly process the sudden reappearance of Ryan’s absent father Aaron.
Interesting Facts
- This special marked the first time a Dalek appeared without its classic armored casing for an extended period, instead using a cobbled-together improvised shell built from scavenged junkyard parts.
- It aired as a New Year’s Day special rather than the traditional Christmas Day slot, a first for the modern series since its 2005 revival.
- The story deliberately avoided the word “Christmas” in favor of tying the plot to New Year celebrations and fireworks in Sheffield’s city center.
- It reintroduces Ryan’s absent father Aaron as a recurring emotional subplot, continuing the show’s grounded, family-centered approach to companion storytelling under Chibnall.
- The Dalek’s mutant creature form was achieved through a combination of prosthetics and practical puppetry rather than full CGI.
