Summary

The Doctor and her friends arrive at a seemingly idyllic alien resort only to discover it sits atop a post-apocalyptic, radiation-scarred wasteland overrun by mutated humanoid creatures called Dregs, and in the episode’s final twist, that this ravaged planet is in fact a future, climate-devastated Earth itself, a stark environmental warning delivered directly to the audience in the episode’s closing dialogue.

Interesting Facts

  • The episode ends with an unusually direct, fourth-wall-adjacent environmental message about climate change, delivered by the Doctor to the audience.
  • It was one of the more divisive episodes among fans and critics for its heavy-handed messaging and unusual tonal shifts between resort comedy and post-apocalyptic horror.
  • The “Dregs” creature designs and orphan planet setting were created using a mix of prosthetics, practical sets, and CGI enhancement.
  • This story marks one of the season’s few standalone “runaround” adventures without direct ties to the ongoing Timeless Child/Master story arc.
  • Writer Ed Hime, who also wrote “It Takes You Away,” again leaned into surreal, high-concept science fiction with a grounded emotional hook involving a family unaware of their situation.
