Summary

On a war-torn planet, the Doctor steps on a Villengard landmine triggered by his Time Lord biology and must stand frozen in place for the entire episode, while Ruby and soldier Mundy Flynn fend off deadly “ambulance” robots, and the Doctor works out that the ongoing war has been entirely manufactured for profit by the weapons company Villengard, with no enemy actually fighting them, ultimately convincing a dead soldier’s digital remnant to leak the truth and end the war.

Interesting Facts

  • This marked Steven Moffat’s first Doctor Who script since 2017’s “Twice Upon a Time,” structured as a tense “bottle episode” confined almost entirely to one small location.
  • Varada Sethu makes a surprise appearance as soldier Mundy Flynn, a full year before her officially announced role as companion Belinda Chandra began; a later episode reveals Mundy as Belinda’s distant descendant.
  • Moffat drew directly on the landmine sequence from 1975’s “Genesis of the Daleks” and expanded on the Villengard weapons company he had created for 2005’s “The Doctor Dances.”
  • Ncuti Gatwa named this his favorite episode of the series.
  • The episode scored 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and drew 3.57 million consolidated viewers.
