Summary

Four hundred thousand years after the events of 2008’s “Midnight,” the Doctor and Belinda arrive at a devastated mining colony where the only survivor is a deaf cook, Aliss Fenly, who unknowingly carries the same unseen, unnamed entity from that earlier story concealed directly behind her, killing anyone who moves into its space, and the group ultimately frees Aliss using a mercury “liquid mirror” that the entity fears, though it escapes into space by transferring itself onto a soldier.

Interesting Facts

  • The story was originally conceived around Nigerian Orisha spirits but was rewritten as a stealth sequel to “Midnight” after the writers felt they could not do the Orisha mythology justice.
  • Rose Ayling-Ellis, a deaf actress, communicates through British Sign Language throughout, with the script adjusted following her casting and reviewed by a deafness consultant.
  • The mysterious entity is never shown on screen, preserving the mystery established in the original 2008 episode.
  • The episode ends with a reveal that the entity has reached Mrs Flood’s ship, tying directly into the season’s ongoing arc.
  • It received a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and drew 3.24 million consolidated viewers.
