Summary
A year after the Master’s conquest of Earth, Martha emerges from her lonely, worldwide trek to spark a plan reliant on a global network of hope and belief in the Doctor, secretly aged and weakened by the Master’s cruelty. As the scheme comes to fruition and the Doctor is restored, he is forced to face the Master’s ultimate fate directly, leaving Martha to make her own final choice about her future away from the TARDIS.

- The story’s climax, in which humanity’s collective belief restores the aged Doctor, proved one of the most divisive plot devices of the entire RTD era.
- This marks Martha Jones’s departure as a full-time companion, choosing to leave the TARDIS on her own terms rather than being written out through tragedy.
- John Simm’s Master is seemingly killed at the story’s end, refusing to regenerate, though the character would return in later specials.
