Summary
After a dinner date with Danny Pink goes sour over his army past, Clara returns home to find the Doctor obsessing over a theory: that a creature with the perfect ability to hide might explain the universal childhood fear of something under the bed. Using the TARDIS’s telepathic circuits to chase down her own subconscious, Clara instead lands them in the childhood bedroom of young Rupert (later Danny) Pink, comforting him through a nightmare that inadvertently seeds his future soldier identity. Skipping forward, they meet Orson Pink, a stranded time-travel pilot descended from Danny, before the circuits pull them to a barn on Gallifrey, where Clara unknowingly comforts a frightened child who turns out to be the Doctor himself, feeding him the very lesson about fear that will shape him for centuries. The episode closes on Clara’s reconciliation with Danny, while the true nature — or existence — of the creature under the bed is left tantalisingly unresolved.
Interesting Facts
- Steven Moffat conceived the episode as a low-budget “chamber piece” written to prove to himself he still could, deliberately built around dialogue and suggestion rather than a visible monster.
- The episode retroactively explains why the War Doctor chose an abandoned barn to activate the Moment in “The Day of the Doctor” — it is revealed here to be the Doctor’s own childhood home on Gallifrey.
- It received widespread critical acclaim, was nominated for both the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) and a Bram Stoker Award — the first Doctor Who episode ever nominated for the latter.
- Director Douglas Mackinnon found a childhood photo of First Doctor actor William Hartnell and had the hair team style the boy playing the young Doctor to resemble him.
- The episode’s final line — “Fear makes companions of us all,” whispered by Clara to the sleeping child Doctor — directly echoes a line spoken by the First Doctor in the very first Doctor Who serial, “An Unearthly Child” (1963).
