Summary

A hardboiled detective novel found by the Doctor turns out to be describing events not yet lived, leading the group to 1930s Manhattan where the Weeping Angels have taken over an apartment building as a “battery farm,” feeding on the temporal energy of victims sent back in time again and again. As Rory is snatched by an Angel and hurled into the past, Amy is forced into an impossible choice that will separate her from the Doctor forever.

Interesting Facts

  • This episode marks the emotional departure of both Amy Pond and Rory Williams, the Doctor’s longest-serving companions of the era.
  • River Song’s role as the fictional “Melody Malone,” author of the in-universe novel guiding events, adds a clever metafictional layer to the story.
  • Amy and Rory’s ending, trapped together in the past but happy, unable to be reached again by the Doctor due to a paradox around New York, was praised as bittersweet rather than tragic.
  • The Statue of Liberty appearing as a moving Weeping Angel became one of the era’s most talked-about, if divisive, visual set pieces.
