Summary

Living quietly as a modern-day nanny with no memory of her earlier “Impossible Girl” incarnations, Clara Oswald calls a mysterious helpline for computer troubles and unwittingly summons the Doctor himself, who has been tracking a sinister presence uploading human minds through wireless networks worldwide. As the Doctor and Clara race to rescue victims trapped inside the data cloud, the Great Intelligence’s operatives close in on them both.

Interesting Facts

  • This episode formally introduces Clara Oswald as a full-time, present-day TARDIS companion, following her earlier fragmented appearances.
  • The Doctor’s new means of tracking Clara down, via a phone number scrawled inside a book from centuries earlier, ties back thematically to “The Snowmen.”
  • Celia Imrie’s Miss Kizlet, a corporate operative for the Great Intelligence, presides over an office of enslaved, “uploaded” human drones.
  • Motorbike chase scenes filmed up the side of the Shard in London became a standout visual sequence for the episode.
