Summary
After the TARDIS is stolen, the Doctor and Jamie are lured through an antique shop back to Victorian England and ultimately to Skaro, home of the Daleks. There the Daleks force the Doctor to help them isolate the “human factor,” hoping to make themselves more effective conquerors by better understanding their enemies, a scheme that spirals out of control and erupts into a devastating Dalek civil war.
Interesting Facts
- This serial introduces companion Victoria Waterfield, whose father Edward is coerced into helping the Daleks before ultimately turning against them.
- It was originally intended, and billed at the time, as “the final end” of the Daleks, following creator Terry Nation’s attempts to sell the monsters to American television.
- Only Episode 2 survives complete in the BBC archive; the remaining episodes have been recreated with animation.
- The story introduces the “Emperor Dalek” for the first time and the concept of the “Dalek Factor,” ideas that would echo through later Dalek stories for decades.
