Summary
On the colony world of Terra Alpha, unhappiness is a crime punishable by death under the enforced cheerfulness of tyrant Helen A and her feared enforcers, the Happiness Patrol, aided by the sadistic confectionery-themed executioner the Kandy Man. Allying with the oppressed, blues-loving Pipe People and a disillusioned former Patrol officer, the Doctor and Ace set out to dismantle Helen A’s regime and free Terra Alpha from its forced, deadly joy.
Interesting Facts
- The story is widely read as a political satire, with Helen A’s authoritarian government interpreted by many at the time as a pointed allegory for Margaret Thatcher’s premiership.
- The Kandy Man’s design was so visually similar to the British confectionery mascot Bertie Bassett that the manufacturer reportedly complained to the BBC.
- Its bleak subject matter dealing with oppression and state-sanctioned executions was unusually dark territory for a family television serial of the era.
