Summary

Summoned to Trenzalore, the site of the Doctor’s own future grave, the Doctor, Clara, and the Paternoster Gang confront the vengeful Great Intelligence, who plans to enter the Doctor’s own timeline and unravel every victory he has ever won from within. Clara sacrifices herself into the timeline to undo the damage, scattering fragmented versions of herself throughout the Doctor’s history, and in the process the Doctor’s oldest, most carefully hidden secret is finally revealed.

  • This finale finally explains Clara’s repeated appearances across different times and places throughout the Doctor’s past, confirming her as the “Impossible Girl.”
  • The episode ends with the shock reveal of a previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor, played by John Hurt, foreshadowed only as “the Doctor” the character himself refuses to acknowledge.
