Summary
The newly regenerated Thirteenth Doctor crash-lands in Sheffield with no memory of her new self or her TARDIS, and is drawn into a night-train attack by an alien hunter named Tzim-Sha who is hunting a data-scarred human for trophies as part of a warrior rite of passage. Teaming up with three ordinary Sheffield residents—trainee police officer Yasmin Khan, forklift driver Ryan Sinclair, and his grandmother-figure Grace and her husband Graham—the Doctor must reconstruct a makeshift sonic screwdriver and repel the alien threat using only scavenged Earth technology, but the victory comes at a devastating personal cost when Grace is killed confronting the alien, setting the tone for the new era and cementing the surviving three as her new traveling companions.
Interesting Facts
- This was Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the first woman to play the Doctor in the show’s history, a casting reveal that had been announced at the end of the 2017 finale.
- It marked the first time a new series premiere aired without the classic title sequence and theme music at the very start, delaying them until partway through as a stylistic choice for the new era.
