Summary
The Doctor and Clara find themselves recruited, alongside augmented hacker Psi and shapeshifting mutant Saibra, into a heist to rob the impregnable Bank of Karabraxos — all four having agreed to a memory wipe beforehand so they can’t recall the plan. Guided by messages from a mysterious “Architect,” the team infiltrates the bank, which is protected by a telepathic creature called the Teller that can detect criminal intent and liquefy the brains of anyone guilty. Saibra and Psi each appear to sacrifice themselves along the way, though both survive via hidden teleports, while the Doctor and Clara are eventually brought before the bank’s ruthless director, Madame Karabraxos, who turns out to be the real architect of the entire scheme. The final twist reveals the “heist” was engineered by the Doctor himself, summoned by a dying, regretful Karabraxos, to free the Teller’s captive mate and let the last two of an entire species escape to live in peace.

- Director Douglas Mackinnon has said the goal was to make “a heist movie for Doctor Who,” incorporating classic heist-film tropes but with time travel folded into the plot mechanics.
- Keeley Hawes plays dual roles as both Ms Delphox and Madame Karabraxos, since Delphox is revealed to be one of Karabraxos’s many clones.
- Psi’s mental gallery of “the galaxy’s most notorious criminals,” shown to lure the Teller away, is a deep-cut continuity nod including a Sensorite, a Terileptil, an Ice Warrior, the Gunslinger from “A Town Called Mercy,” and characters from Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
