Summary
Stubbornly refusing to regenerate after his mortal wounding at the climax of “The Doctor Falls,” the Twelfth Doctor retreats to the South Pole, the exact time and place where his very first incarnation is also refusing to regenerate at the end of his own final adventure, “The Tenth Planet.” The two Doctors, separated by centuries of lives but united by the same fear of change and death, meet face to face, each baffled and needled by the other’s manner, and are soon joined by an amnesiac First World War British Army Captain frozen in the falling snow, who turns out to be far more significant to the Doctor’s personal history than he first appears. All three are abducted aboard a mysterious glass spacecraft crewed by sentient, memory-harvesting avatars who wish to preserve the Captain’s final moment before death for eternity, forcing both Doctors to confront what remembering, forgetting, and dying actually mean. Aided by a brief, bittersweet vision of Clara and a testing exchange with Bill Potts’s data-ghost, the First Doctor ultimately finds the strength to accept his own regeneration into his second self, giving the Twelfth Doctor, having relived and made peace with his oldest self’s fears, the courage to finally accept his own. In a quiet, contented final speech to no one and everyone, the Twelfth Doctor lets go and regenerates, his last act as the Doctor, into an unexpected new face and voice: his thirteenth incarnation, revealed for the first time as a woman.
